Thrift Stores in Illinois

Illinois thrift culture is really two separate markets separated by the distance between Chicago and everything else. Chicago's neighborhood-specific thrift ecosystem — the Brown Elephant in Boystown and Andersonville, Village Discount Outlet's 20+ locations, Ragstock in Wicker Park, the independent vintage boutiques of Logan Square — is one of the most sophisticated in the Midwest. The city rewards thrifters who know which neighborhood to target on which day, and the donation flows from its diverse population of 2.7 million people create an inventory breadth that smaller cities can't replicate.

Downstate Illinois is a completely different proposition. Peoria, Rockford, Springfield, and Champaign-Urbana have Goodwill and Salvation Army locations that benefit from the clearance of large midwestern homes and farms — furniture, tools, housewares, and vintage kitchenware that surfaces at prices that would cause a line around the block in Chicago. The university towns of Champaign and Carbondale have student-driven thrift economies with high turnover and consistent restocks.
